Kankri Vantas is a mutant blooded troll who lived on Beforus shortly before he and the rest of his session caused the Reckoning. [2]
Kankri's overbearing concern for "social justice" and the "triggers" of the people around him were inspired by the culture prevalent on microblogging platform Tumblr at the time, where much of Homestuck's readership was then based, which is more broadly parodied by Openbound's Bubblr gimmick.
Kankri's rambling and cantankerous nature can also be seen as an exaggerated caricature of Karkat's negative traits and how they were perceived by readers on Tumblr at the time. His sense of dress also mirrors popular depictions of Karkat as wearing a thick sweater, with the leggings he wears underneath, like his post-scratch “ Righteous Leggings ” , referencing the contemporary Pantskat meme.
Like other trolls with his rare blood color, no sign was ever made for Kankri, so he wears none on his clothing. His quirk, however, does involve the “ sym69ls ” associated with the Signless after his execution; how Kankri came to use this quirk, given his distaste for the Signless' teachings, is not clear. The letters replaced by the symbols, B and O, are also the names given to some human blood types.
Kankri borrows his title of Seer from Terezi Pyrope; Terezi's dancestor Latula Pyrope likewise borrows her Knight title from Kankri's dancestor Karkat.
Kankri was a name suggested by Tyltalis for Karkat. Cancri is the Latin genitive singular form of cancer, used in the formation of star names in the Cancer constellation (e.g. Alpha Cancri, and the root of the words cancrine and cancriform, adjectives describing things pertaining to or resembling crabs or cancers. The name Kankri also phonetically resembles the word cranky, describing the overall demeanor of the Vantas family.

Aranea Serket exposits much of Kankri's history to Meenah Peixes:
“ The Seer of 8lood played quite a different role on our team from that of his successor, though his potential as a 8lood player went similarly unrealized. It was only when he grew up on Alternia did he 8egin to tap into his a8ilities, triggering recollection of our lives on 8eforus, and what we all went through.
He remem8ered our more peaceful way of life, and his desire to unite people. [. ] I believe the Knight of 8lood now carries his 8urden, whether he has decided to accept it or not.
Many of us on Alternia grew up to 8ecome secret followers of his teachings. Just as many of us now follow them, though I'd say with a 8it more detachment, 8ecause we're dead! Speaking personally, I'd refer to myself as more of a "fan" of his story, and what it represents. 8oth the hidden potential in our friend he never quite found, and the hidden potential in all our people.
During our session, Kankri's trials as a leader were just as frustrating as those of his successor. He found it very hard to get others to take him seriously. While Meenah would often try to divide us with her trou8lemaking, and turn us against each other to make us stronger - unsuccessfully I might add - he would try to unite us through proselytizing and lecture, just as unsuccessfully. ”
Kankri is a naïve person, dismissing the necessarily violent methods he used to fight for social justice post-scratch. [citation needed] He is long-winded and self-righteous, speaking in extensive, jargon-filled diatribes and almost always with the intent of educating his conversational "partner" on something he feels they are ignorant of. To this end, he speaks of psychological triggers frequently and flippantly, apologizing profusely when he believes someone has been triggered, even if this is not the case. [citation needed] Despite this outward persona, he can just as easily be dismissive of the concerns of others when he deems them unimportant, calling Porrim's feminism [3]
This attitude earned Kankri the nickname "the Insufferable", [4] playing with his post-scratch destiny as the Sufferer. This naïvety also makes him easily tricked, such as by Meenah. [citation needed]
His "objective" facade is easily broken, and he is quick to anger, showing a loud personality much like his dancestor's and like what he demonstrated post-scratch as the Sufferer. He takes his own personal space very seriously, becoming agitated when too many ghosts enter the ministrife and begin to crowd around him.
Kankri is celibate, seeking to abstain from any and all romantic relationships; he expresses surprise at finding that post-scratch, he broke this vow to be with Meulin, “ 9f all pe9ple ” . [5]
Porrim holds some fondness for Kankri, having kept him out of trouble in the early days of their Sgrub session, [citation needed] but she dislikes his lack of consideration for her discussions of gender politics. [citation needed] Regardless, she plays a motherly role toward him, mirroring the relationship between them post-scratch. Seemingly unlike the Signless, however, Kankri does not show appreciation for Porrim's treatment of him; on Beforus, his rebellious nature manifests as teenage rebellion against his mother figure, and so much as an attempt from Porrim to clean a spot from his face can put him into a rage. [6]
Porrim made Kankri his red sweater, to keep him warm and to hide his righteous leggings which she hated seeing. [citation needed]
Kankri seems to dislike Mituna, and deems his crude nature and need for protective headgear an ableist stereotype of disabled people. [citation needed] However Kankri still attempts to defends him from ableist remarks from Meenah. [citation needed]
Kankri has some unrequited flushed attraction to Latula as well, and notices many of her odd little habits. [citation needed] Their relationship mirrors the complicated history between their dancestors, Terezi Pyrope and Karkat.
Cronus enjoys Kankri's company because Kankri validates his human identity. [citation needed] He becomes frustrated and spiteful, however, when Kankri interferes with his attempts at flirting with Meenah. [citation needed]
Kankri considers Karkat to be a dedicated pupil, largely thanks to his misinterpretation of his dancestor's shocked silences during their conversation. [citation needed] In truth, Karkat resents Kankri and his lectures, which he perceives to be overly long and condescending; he describes Kankri as “ PROBABLY THE WORST ASSHOLE THERE IS ” . [citation needed]
